In front of a supermarket in the eastern German state of Saxony, a stabbing incident has resulted in two individuals sustaining severe injuries. The police have issued an arrest warrant for the 23-year-old suspect who carried out the attack on Friday.
What information have we gathered up until now?
The incident occurred on Thursday night in Rochlitz, situated roughly 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) north of the large city of Chemnitz.
As stated by the Chemnitz police, the suspect was positioned near the entrance when he attacked a 59-year-old woman upon her exit from the supermarket, stabbing her.
A young man, aged 18, who works at a nearby store, came to assist the woman and he too got injured by the assailant.
The individual was pinned down by bystanders until law enforcement reached the location. The accused put up fierce resistance during the apprehension and fought against the officers.
The two individuals have been transported to the medical facility for care. Their lives are not at risk.
The suspect had previously been prohibited from entering the supermarket.
With the apparent perpetrator in custody, the police have opened an investigation into the attack.
The suspect had went into the supermarket in the afternoon, despite being banned from the premises. A supermarket employee had asked him to leave.
Germany is implementing stricter security protocols regarding knife-related crimes, especially following a fatal incident in the Western German town of Solingen back in August.
In recent months, the German authorities have attempted to outlaw knives at various public gatherings like festivals or sporting events. They've also aimed to restrict knife access at railway stations, places frequently prone to criminal activities.
