Floods and Mud Engulf Lanzarote Streets: State of Emergency Declared

On Monday, April 14, roads turned into muddy streams in Lanzarote following heavy rain on the Spanish island of the Canary Islands.

A state of emergency was announced for the renowned tourist spot following 6 cm (2.4 inches) of rainfall within just two hours on Saturday, according to emergency services.

Several houses were engulfed, stated Enrique Espinosa, who leads the emergency services for the Lanzarote government.

"We've been operating around the clock since last night, handling 300 calls throughout the evening, with numerous ones coming from Arrecife and Teguise," Espinosa said to RTVE public television on Sunday.
