The Future of Science is Female: seize your chance with the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards!

Fondation L'Oréal along with UNESCO proudly present the seventh iteration of their For Women in Science (FWIS) Young Talents Award for South Africa. This esteemed programme focuses on supporting remarkable women scientists younger than 40 years old, fostering advancement in vital areas like health care, renewable energy sources, and farming practices.

Much more than just an accolade, the FWIS initiative offers a profound chance for accomplished women in research. This program includes leadership development, entry into a powerful mentorship network, and assistance aimed at helping female scientists surmount obstacles and progress in their careers.

At L’Oréal, we trust in the impact of scientific advancements to drive significant transformation," states Michelle Gololo, who leads Corporate Affairs & Engagement for L’Oréal South Africa. "Together with UNESCO, we pledge to support diversity, quality, and creativity in science while underlining the vital contribution made by women towards advancing research and shaping tomorrow’s innovations.

Female researchers who are committed to making an impact in their areas of study are invited to apply. Those selected will be awarded grants totaling up to R160,000 to aid in funding their doctoral or postdoctoral work, thus helping advance the frontiers of knowledge.

Receiving the FWIS Award has profoundly shaped my journey, greatly influencing my career trajectory. This accolade has granted me access to extend my professional connections and achieve global visibility. Additionally, it has unlocked various prospects and bolstered both my abilities and self-assurance necessary for thriving in my domain," shares Sapokazi Timake, PhD candidate at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and recipient of the 2023 award. "It was an honor to connect with and glean insights from other distinguished female scientists hailing from sub-Saharan regions, thereby enhancing my comprehension of the hurdles and openings present for women pursuing careers in African scientific fields."

The FWIS program boasts a commendable history of backing exceptional scholars, disbursing more than R4 million in funds to narrow the gender disparity in science and promote top-notch contributions to the worldwide academic community.
