Giant Squid Makes History: Unforgettable Sighting Off South African Shores

For the first time since its discovery nearly a decade ago, the enormous squid has been captured on video.

Reaching lengths of up to 10 meters and tipping the scales at almost half a tonne, the colossal squid, known scientifically as Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, stands out as the planet’s biggest invertebrate.

The video, captured by researchers Onboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor, footage captures the creature as it swims in its native deep-sea habitat, offering fresh insights into this mysterious giant organism.

Dr Virmani, who participated in the expedition near the South Sandwich Islands, South Atlantic Ocean said: 'These indelible memories keep reminding us that the ocean still holds countless secrets waiting to be uncovered.'
